Let's say I harvest something, a rare or whatever, and when I examine it it says that I could refine this. How do I do this? This part of the tradeskilling process has eluded me!!! Apologies in advance if this is a dumb question.

Basically what that means is that you can 'use' it in crafting. Refining = Use. A rare harvested item can be crafted just as a raw/regular item can be. I believe that's what that means anyway... haha

So, let's say the recipe calls for something that I don't have, ie wood, I could "substitute" this item, as long as the refine item is a correct substitute, and use this inplace of what the recipe calls for?

Nod. The item you have is not havested though. It's usually a drop from a mob. So, if you picked up a "refined ash twig" or something like that.. it's the same as a harvested "severed ash" and can be used in the exact same way.

Those items that can be substituted can be sold at the merchant also. Unlike harvested raws that are worth nothing, these at least have some value. I tend to just sell them rather than use them as I get more money that way.
When they had tradeskill writs in the game, you could use those and get a bit of extra money back, but now that those aren't in, that won't help much hehe
