At first I wasn't sure what to think about them and I scoffed highly at the price that some Woodworkers were charging to start out with....no suprise. But I came across someone selling the items for fairly cheap and thought I'd buy and try them out.
There are 5 tools that shorten the time to harvest depending on level and I was suprised by how that adds up, especially with the sandalwood ones.
Skill - tool name *gathering - shovel *mining - pick foresting - saw fishing - fishing pole trapping - trap
* denotes most popular to buy
They are also separated out by tier (and I was told that it goes by whichever level is higher on your character, adventurer or crafting):
Level 20 - ash (shortens by 0.5 seconds)
Level 30 - briarwood (shortens by 1 second)
Level 40 - teak (shortens by 1.5 seconds)
Level 50 - sandalwood (shortens by 2 seconds) (highest as of this date)
I bought my Sandalwood ones for 5 gold per piece by a person named Sylk just to give you an idea so you could ingame mail that person to get them at a much cheaper rate than buying off of the broker. They are attuneable so you'll need to upgrade as you grow.

I thought that it would be cumbersome on switching out all the tools so this is what I came up with after reading what some other harvesters used:
I have one bar dedicated to just harvesting. I put all 5 tools in my inventory and drag them to the bar taking up the first 5 spaces, then I put two items in my charm slots and drag the two charm slots to the next two spaces, then I drag the buttons from my knowledge book indicating what skill I want to use to the last 5 spaces. This allows me to queue up the harvest while one is going.
To switch them out, I put my main harvesting tool that I use which is the shovel in my first charm slot, then I put the one I use the 2nd most in the 2nd charm slot which is the pick for me. Then all you have to do using your bar is right click and hit 'equip' on the next tool you need and it automatically swaps out with the 2nd charm slot one. Pretty easy.

Did you find a big difference in using these tools?

The Sandelwood tools give a 2 Sec improvement. Each lower level give less: teak 1.5; briarwood 1; ash 0.5 2 sec doesn't sound like much but it's a 50% improvement (or is it 100% I always get that confused) from 4 sec to 2 sec. It's huge for the serious gatherer. I am a little lazier that Leiha. I also have a hotkey bar just for gathering but I only have the 5 tools listed on it. I run up to a node select the tool I need (which swaps it with whatever is in my 1st Charm slot) and gather as normal. Since the hotkey bar is my primary I can use the number 1 thru 5 to select the tool (1=saw; 2=shovel; etc)

Well Shylah since my engineering background makes me question everything, I highly doubted it would help out much. BUT the person made it so cheap for me to buy the tools that my curiosity won over. In short, YES, they improve harvesting tremendously......get the gathering tool only and see what you think. I am not sure people would need every tool, but I'd think unless they are a carpenter such as yourself, they can just limit themselves to buying the shovel and the pick. You as a carpenter would want the saw so you could also harvest your wood more efficiently.
Candu thanks for giving the correct times on each level, that makes sense to me and I had no idea it was leveled like that hehe. I also want others to say how they make their gathering less laborious because I'm always looking for an easier way of harvesting. I tried some of the macros out on the boards in order to get all my harvesting down to one button and I couldn't get them to work consistently in terms of wanting them to queue up twice..had no problem getting it to work once hehe. So that is why I still have my 5 different harvesting buttons in my toolbar. I like the idea of selecting by number vs. clicking so I'll have to play around with my hotbars.

I did basically the same thing as Leiha - I have one toolbar that's for harvesting, and I have eight buttons - four to equip the harvesting tools, and four to perform the harvesting action. (I don't fish, so I don't have all five on my toolbar.) They're set up next to each other, so I press 1 to equip my shovel, then 2 to gather from a root node, and so on. You can queue harvesting actions if you use toolbar buttons, too. (You can also mouse over the target node and press 'F' which is the 'default action' button.) Between the new harvesting tools and my Poise AA skill (reduces all cast timers by 30%, including harvesting, CoQ, etc), I'm ripping through these nodes like there's no tomorrow.

So, when you have the proper harvesting tool equiped, you can't just double click the node?

Yes you can doubleclick still if you want to but I put each harvesting button on my bar because it queues it up and I my clicks go in half which helps my wrist in the long run. Drag one down to your bar and you will see what I mean. You can actually see it say queuing up. If you press it again when you already have one in the queue, it'll cancel it out. Pressing F works too but it doesn't queue up either.
And ohhhh I want the poise AA too! But I don't think I have the patience to be a chain class /snicker.
