The NDA was lifted today, so now we can talk about Free Realms. I was wondering if anyone else was in the Beta test? I'm most often on Server 2, and my toon's name is "Capo Quickpants". When I created the character, I requested a custom name of "Flea", but so far that name has not been granted, so I'm still Capo.
Impressions:
This is a fun, "light-hearted" game from what I've seen. Yes you can adventure, discover places, fight, grab loot, and level up, but there is a lot of focus on other "professions", and you can freely switch back and forth. For example, you can be a cook. However, making food isn't like EQ2 crafting... instead, you play a series of mini-games, each of them timed and skill-based. It's usually pretty easy to accomplish the main objective, but like with arcade games, you can still try and push the limit and go for a "high score". Harvesting? mini-game. Mining? mini-game. Training a pet? mini-game. Wanna be a racer (another profession)? mini-game (similar to Mario Kart). Demolition Derby driver? mini-game.
Currently I'm addicted to the harvesting mini-game. It's similar to Bejeweled (i.e., "match three"), but different. As with Bejeweled, you have a playing area (rougly 15 x 12) with several different types of nodes. You try to find three or more in a string, select them with the mouse, and those nodes are removed and the nodes above them "fall down" (ala Tetris) and more fill in at the top. As you remove the matched nodes, they accumulate in baskets, and when you fill the basket of that node type, you "harvest" one item of that type. These harvestables are then used in cooking, but the game is so addictive that I'm accumulating piles of resources. :-)
The racing game and the demolition derby game are a bunch of fun as well. I can see where after a stressful day of work, there is therapeutic value to putting on your racing clothes, heading off to the track, and smashing up the competition.
Anyway, if you're interested in checking it out, make sure to register for the beta. The web address is wwwfreerealms.com., and if you are or do get in, look me up!
