and the start of a new life ?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The day was one Vikusha would always remember as the strangest for a long time. There was very little activity in the Hall and there was not the usual chatter. The Lord's family stayed in their part of the house and none of the household saw them. She was left mostly to herself to do what she wished.
Clouds were starting to form outside as Ro was giving it's last light of the day. The Hall was dark and unlit as was the custom after the death of a family member. Vikusha sat at the table in the kitchen by herself. Her eyes were trying to close, when she heard a whisper,
"Vikusha, wake up. Can't you hear them?"
She sat up straight and listened, but saw no one in the room with her, "Who's there?"
"It is me, little Viku."
"No one is allowed to call me that. Her Ladyship has forbidden it."
"Her Ladyship's rules don't apply to me, Viku."
Vikusha turned around and saw no one in the kitchen, "Where are you?"
"Right here, Viku", and a shadow form of an old Iksar appeared out of the dark in front of her.
She was dressed in the garb of a shaman of high rank and carried a spear.
Vikusha recognized it, "That's the 'Spear of Viku', no one is allowed to handle it but the family. They are the only ones who are even allowed to polish it."
"I am not allowed to handle my own spear?"
"Your spear ......"
"My name is Viku, the shaman smiled, I've come to give you a message, Vikusha. And a warning."
She sighed and then continued, "You haven't heard them have you, young one? The voices of your ancestors, the voices of your people?"
"I've never heard any voices."
"They've been calling you, young one. You just never had the time to listen to them. Now you do. And now you must answer."
"How can I when I cannot hear these voices?"
"You must leave Sebilis to hear them. You must find your people in Timorous Deep and listen."
Vikusha looked at her and frowned, "This is the only home I know. His Lordship found me. I have no other home."
"Vikusha, there are those who do not want you here and never have. You must leave here and get away from them,or they will see to it you never understand your true calling."
There was silence until she spoke again, "Your tomorrows lie else where. Your tomorrows are with your people in Timorous Deep. Listen to them and follow."
"How can I do this? How do I get to Timorous Deep?"
"Listen to your heart and soul, Vikusha. You will know what to do if you just listen."
The figure bowed and faded from her site. The next thing she knew, she jerked her head up from the table. Had she been asleep all this time? She shook her head, "It must've been a dream; just a dream", she thought. "But then again..... it was so real."
Vikusha then put her head back down and fell in to a sound sleep with her head resting on her arms at the kitchen table.
The morning warmth of Ro was hitting Vikusha on the top of her head through the windows. She looked up to see she was still alone and the kitchen was quiet.
It was still early, and no family would be up yet. She decided that while she had the time, she would go outside and get some fresh air. Hopefully clearing those strange thoughts she had been having during the night.
She walked from the kitchen and found her way to the hall leading outside. In this hallway were all the great trophy weapons of family members passed, including Viku's spear.
She looked up at it, as she usually did to admire it, but this morning it was not in its place on the wall. She broke out in a cold sweat, "Viku's spear! Where is it? Who took it?"
She decide it was best to go back to the kitchen before anyone saw her and accused her of stealing it.
She started to go back to the kitchen, when she saw it. It was laying across the arms of a chair within her grasp. But there was no way Vikusha could put it back in its place on the wall. It was too far for her to reach.
And then the voice again, far away, quiet, but there, "You will know what to do when the times comes, Vikusha. Listen to your heart."
Without hesitation, and in a boldness that surprised her, she took the spear and found her way to one of the large closets in the family living quarters close to Lady Mireen's room.
