If anyone knows how to get in touch with Kaaylin -- let her know, maybe she can find a computer somewhere :-)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
"You remember me. I'm honored."
"You're hard to forget, Uhlen."
"Indeed?" There was a quiet, low laugh from Uhlen, "So we meet again; to perhaps take up where we left off last time? Only this time, there is no priest friend with you. Such a shame."
"If I remember correctly, we were in a similar situation last time."
"Yes. I had my blade to your throat. I was going to kill you, if I recall. However ......"
Shylah smiled a weak smile, "I had Quince with me. That spoiled your plans somewhat."
"Yes your little, troublesome Feir'Dal fury friend. She was most annoying. But she isn't here. I believe it is indeed a good time to finish what I started last time."
His blade came closer to Shylah's neck and she had to struggle to keep it away.
"I will miss our encounters, Shylah. They have been, shall we say, 'interesting' to say the least. But I'm afraid I must move on to other things. All good things must come to an end."
He was silent for a moment and the knife came closer, "I will make your death as quick and painless as I can possibly make it."
"I appreciate that, Uhlen."
Her captor was quiet for a moment,
"Good bye, Shylah."
She kept her eyes closed and waited for the inevitable.
Suddenly, there was a jerk from behind her as Uhlen moved as if in pain.
A soft, but commanding female voice came to her. She opened her eyes and smiled.
"I don't believe we've been properly introduced. Kaaylin Soulsoother."
"Uhlen Shadowmire."
"'Uhlen Shadowmire', yes, I believe I've heard that name mentioned somewhere before. An assassin of some rather dubious reputation."
"I am highly regarded for my skills."
"I'm sure you are, Uhlen. But you see, I don't like assassins."
A thoughtful silence and then she continued, "Shy, is this Teir'Dal bothering you?"
"Yes, at the moment, just a bit."
"I see."
She took a deep sigh and continued, "Uhlen, I don't like knives being held to my friends' throats. So I want you to do something for me. I want you to very, very slowly take your knife from Shylah's throat and throw it on the ground in front of her as far as you can throw it. Oh, and just in case you're thinking about it, if you put one mark on her, just one tiny little mark, I'll repay it ten times over. Now.... DO it."
The Teir'Dal did as he was told and Shylah bent down and picked up the weapon, "Very nice Uhlen, thank you."
She moved over and stood beside Kaaylin, "Shy, are you alright?"
"I think so."
Kaaylin motioned at Uhlen, "What are we going to do with HIM?"
"Oh, I thought I'd let you decide", she smiled.
Kaaylin looked at Shylah with a puzzled look for a few seconds, then smiled back,
"You know Uhlen, normally I'd kill you. But this must be your lucky day......because I'm going to let you go. With this one little small bit of advice.......... never, ever try to kill a bard. We're too fast, too smart, and we're very hard to kill."
She leaned close to his ear and whispered, "See you around, Uhlen."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
They had gone into stealth after leaving Uhlen, and the two friends were now talking as they walked down the back streets of North Freeport.
"So you know Uhlen?"
Kaaylin looked away and was silent for a few seconds,
"Only by reputation, Shylah. I've seen some of his, umm....... his work, so to speak. He has a rather unique style and flair."
Shylah whispered to herself, "Yes he does, doesn't he?"
"Shylah. What are you doing in Freeport by yourself? Of all the people to run into in Freeport, you happen to run into Uhlen Shadowmire. Why isn't there someone with you?"
"I was on a mission for the Queen. Quick one. Get in, do, and get out. Plain and simple"
"What kind of 'mission' ?"
"I can't talk about it, Kaay."
"Oh, one of 'those' missions", she smiled.
"Afraid so."
"Well then, I'll just see you out of Freeport safely. Uhlen knows you're here now. It's not safe anymore."
"Kaay....please. Hey, what are YOU doing here by yourself?"
"I'm not here alone. Guild thing, we're doing some training. Learning the way around Freeport. I got bored."
"I don't need any help getting out of Freeport, I'm fine."
"No you're not", Kaaylin smiled, oh, you know what?
We could go over to Stonestair Byway, you could sing a few melodies, bat those baby blues a little ........ and the Kerra males would be putty in your paws. They'd probably start a riot to get to see who would escort you out."
She paused, "No on second thought, maybe we better not. They'd call the guards if a riot got started", she giggled.
"Kaaylin."
"Humm?"
"I don't like putty on my paws."
Both of them laughed.
"Ok, but we have to get you out someway. Hey, why don't you just hang with us? We're not going to be here much longer, we're almost through. Uhlen won't try anything while you're with a GROUP of people, he likes his life way too much."
"Kaay, honest, I appreciate it......"
"Nope, not going to listen. You're with us now, we'll get you out."
Shylah sighed, "Alright, I'm coming." She was thoughtful for a minute, "Kaay, why didn't you kill Uhlen back there?"
"Shy, when I kill Uhlen Shadowmire, it will be on my own terms, my way, not his. I want him to know who's killing him. We fight face to face---the bard way. Or not at all."
Shylah smiled, "Thought that was why. Thanks again for the rescue."
"No problem, you're welcome."
