Hetae looked down on the small, limp form and smiled,
"Now you are about to learn what true pain is."
He stopped briefly and then continued, "Years ago, when I was younger, I experimented on my pets; with some rather interesting results. It seems they developed a taste for blood, and of course, I didn't discourage them. They are more primitive than my pets now, but I have let them live. They have multiplied down here in the dungeons. I have also been told that their bites are very, very painful."
He looked down once again at the blood on the dungeon floor.
"Yes, that should be enough 'bait' to bring them out I believe."
Kaefir heard this conversation from her cell. She finally had heard enough and shouted, "You evil-hearted, sadistic monster!"
"Yes I am."
He turned and looked at Kaefir, "And YOUR torture shall be to hear your friend's screams of pain, and know there is nothing you can do for her, little priest. Oh, and by the way, there are many undead here in the dungeons. I am sure they will keep you occupied."
He bent down and spoke to Elinea, "Good night, Elinea. Pleasant dreams. Although, I doubt seriously if you will get much sleep."
Hetae walked out of Elinea's cell and locked the door behind him.
With a brief look back at her one last time, he closed his eyes and whispered the spell that returned him home.
--------------------------------
Hetae sat at a desk on the upper floor of his Freeport home.
It was quiet except for an occasional noise from his pet sitting by his side. It was late, and Hetae finally closed the book he was reading and doused the candle on the desk. He got up to go to bed, when he heard a door open and close.
"The front door", he suddenly realized.
He grabbed his dagger from the desk and started down the stairs, followed closely by his ever present pet.
On the way down the stairs, he heard a chair move in one of the back lower rooms, then total silence again.
He got down the stairs and stood at the bottom.
"Who's here? Show yourself!"
Soft female laughter filled his ears and an attractive red-haired high elf walked toward him out of the room to his left.
"Hello Hetae."
"Who are you?"
"You don't recognize me, Hetae? Oh, I am disappointed."
A smile spread across her face, "I'm Elinea."
"Oh, I'm sorry, let me correct that ---- I'm Elinea several seasons into the future."
"That's impossible."
"Is it?"
Hetae made a slight motion to his pet, and was interrupted, "I
wouldn't use your pet if I were you. I'd hate to not only destroy it, but you and this lovely home as well."
"Who ARE you?"
"Let me introduce myself then, since you don't seem to know me."
She looked toward the fireplace to her right and raised her hand.
It suddenly and briefly burst into a roaring fire of blue flame and then disappeared.
"I am that which you and the Overlord are trying to control. I am the Blue Flame. Or well, more correctly put perhaps, the Avatar of the Blue Flame."
She looked at him for a what seemed to Hetae like a very long time, "I chose this form to come and see you and talk. The form of the Bearer of the Flame, the one you're torturing in the dungeons at this moment. The one to whom I am bound for the rest of her life. And mine."
She looked at him and smiled again, "It was I who told you I'd kill you someday. I don't appreciate you torturing the Bearer.
She's young and doesn't even know I exist yet, but one day she will."
There was a cold silence as Hetae listened,
"If I were you and the Overlord, I'd make sure her time in Freeport was used wisely, because if she ever has a chance to escape, and does...........
well, she will remember all of this, and both of you are very likely to realize this idea was not to the best interest of either you or Freeport. The flame IS neutral, Hetae. That is your only hope."
She was quiet once again, and smiled, "I have the Bearer to take care of Hetae. I will leave you to your thoughts now. Remember what I said."
She slowly faded from his view and the room was left with a quiet coldness he had never felt before. Hetae closed his eyes and said a spell of guarding to his pet and went back upstairs.
