Part IIc – Delving into the mind of a ten year old Kerran
Furflies tried to stand after drinking from Alfreya’s flask. Try as he might he could not get his legs up under him to support him. Looking through glazed eyes, he saw the Warden Alfreya smiling at her table. Soon Alfreya took the stool next to him and asked him some basic questions (this was to assess the effects the potion was having on him) what is your name? Furflies he responded. Where do you live? In South Qeynos with my family. How old are you? I am ten he said. Feeling that the potion had control of him, Alfreya started to delve a bit deeper into his thoughts. Furflies tell me about your most recent dreams.
Furflies started to relive the dream of the past couple of nights. He spoke of vast meadows, shallow caves, running water, butterflies and birds. Alfreya listened to the stories not paying attention, as these she knew were just young boy stories. When he finished she asked if there were any other dreams he might have had in the past week or so. Furflies nodded, yes there are many more, she asked him to tell her about those as well.
Furflies explained about the fighting dreams, the ones where orcs and kobolds came in waves. He said that he was in a group of people defending some farmland. He described the battles and how as if by magic, he held a dagger in both hands and would attack until the enemies fell in puddles at his feet.
Alfreya listened intently as Furflies relived his most vivid of dreams. Six hours had passed since Furflies told if the first fight. It now was dark outside and Alfreya knew the potion would be wearing off soon and that the young kerran would fall into a deep dreamless sleep. Preparing for this, Alfreya stood and grabbed a blanket and pillow from a nearby chest.
As she predicted, in mid sentence Furflies was curled up in a little ball sound asleep. As he drifted off deeper and deeper Alfreya returned to her crafting table and started to prepare another potion.
Early the next morning, Furflies woke wide eyed as he tried to remember where he was, the fur on the back of his neck stood on end, slowly he started to remember the day before and began to calm down, the fur once again laying flat. Alfreya appeared with breakfast, Furflies ate like he had never been fed before in his life. Drinking warm tea, he started to feel all fluttery inside. Had Alfreya slipped something into his tea? As he realized that she had in fact done this, he already started to feel numb. When she felt he was not able to defend himself she began to question him again.
Furflies’s recalled a dream of hiding in shadows and applying liquid to his daggers that when thrust into his enemy caused great pain and agony. Furflies then recalled how good it felt to be able to jump from shadow to shadow unseen and kill his enemy without sound or sighting.
Fearing this, Alfreya opened the door to her hovel and inside stepped three Royal Qeynosian Guards. Before Furflies realized what was happening they had him in shackles and propped on his feet. With swords drawn they marched him to the dungeon of Qeynos.
Alfreya appeared at the Council of Elders to deliver her summation of what should be done with Furflies. In the audience stood Kevlin, Furflies father. He knew he would only be allowed to speak if called upon. Pacing back and forth Kevlin awaited the decision of the Council of Elders.
Alfreya relived the process that she took with the young Kerran and the stories he told. She explained in detail how his fur puffed out as he recalled the times spent in the shadows and doing battle from those shadows. Hearing this Kevlin started to feel abandoned, he knew the outcome would be bad but hoped it would not be fatal.
As Alfreya finished the Council members huddled amonst themselves and discussed the case and what to do. Reaching a decision with two options they called on Kevlin to answer questions.
Kevlin stood in front of the council ready to defend his son with words and song. The council first asked if he knew if Furflies had ever harmed anyone or anything? Kevlin replied that he had only seen his son kill animals to provide food for his family. They then asked if Furflies felt more comfortable in the day or at night. Kevlin knew the answer and debated whether to lie or tell the truth. With a sigh, he responded that the young kerran felt at ease in the darkness of night. The council then thanked Kevlin for his honesty and retired to the inner chambers to deliberate.
While they were inside Alfreya approached Kevlin telling him how hard it was for her to have to have said the things she had about his son knowing that the outcome would be bad. Kevlin embraced Alfreya and reassured her she had just done the job the council had given her and that he held no ill feelings towards her.
About an hour after they retired the Council returned to the outer chambers and addressed Kevlin. The elder spoke in a regal voice and told Kevlin that they feared that Furflies somehow had become evil and that while it was a difficult decision they were faced with two options to put Furflies to death or banish him from Qeynos. The senior Elder told Kevlin that his actions as a member of the Qeynosian Court weighed heavily on the decision of the Council.
With a slam of a hammer to the stone, the Council stood in unison and passed sentence on young Furflies. This council bans Furflies a Kerran and son of Kevlin BringerofStorms from setting foot in Qeynos or its nearby villages. The name Furflies shall be striken from all records and disallowed to be spoken by anyone of Qeynosian Faith.
Coming Soon A young Kerran must survive!
I hope you enjoy!
