As you progress into the game, some of you may choose to become an artisan and take up a tradeskill.
Once you select your artisan path and begin to level, you will need to start reading up on new recipes. New recipes will allow you to create new items as well as gain more tradeskill experience.
There are two sets of books with volumnes running from 1 - 70 for each, which contain artisan recipes. They are known as your Essentials Texts and Advanced Texts.
Essentials
Essentials texts are considered your basic recipe books. They allow you to make items out of common raws harvested from nodes found in Norrath, such as severed elm, tin cluster, tanned pelt, etc. These texts (books from level 1 - 50) can be purchased by the NPC standing just outside the tradeskill zones and sometimes as drops from mobs. All Essentials texts greater than level 50 can be bought from the broker or from a favorable faction found in the Desert of Flames Expansion pack.
Advanced
Advanced texts contain only "rare" recipes. The recipes within allow you to make items out of rare raws harvested from nodes throughout Norrath, such as cured leather, cedar, ebon, etc. To havest a rare raw is random. There are no real 'tricks' to getting rares other than being persistant. As to the Advanced texts, they can only be purchased from the broker or found as drops from mobs. The experience earned from completing a pristine rare recipe is identical to that of a Essentials pristine recipe of the same level. However, making a rare item will have greater stats as well as sell for a higher price on the broker.
Note: All artisan classes can use Essentials and Advanced texts except for Provisioners (creaters of food and drink). Provisioners cannot make rare food or drink at this time nor can a rare food/drink item be harvested. The closest things provisioners can do to get a 'rare' food/drink recipe is complete the very few quests in EQ2 that can reward you with a food/drink recipe, which will use common raws.
