As you progess in level and the game, you may join new chat channels such as the adventurer channels separated by level tiers (1-9; 10-19; 20-29; etc). Also, you might join alliance channels and other custom channels with friends.
In order to see a list of channel numbers that you've joined, use the command:
/channellist
or
/channelist
This will give you a list of all the channels that you're a part of, which is followed by a number. For example, you get a list like this:
Newbs (1)
Allies (2)
Buddies (3)
To chat in the Allies channel, you would simply type:
/2 hey everybody!
In order to see 'who' is in each channel, use the command:
/whochannel 2
In the example above, a list of character names will appear for those logged in and has access to the Allies channel.
