Typically, when switching to an alt character while in-game, it would require you to "camp to select character screen." Then you would have to go through the process of actually camping, selecting your new character, and then re-entering the game.
A shortcut to switching characters and skipping the "character select screen" is as simple as:
/camp name of selected character
For example, I am currently logged into the game as Shylah, but now I want to switch to my alt Karis. To quickly do this, I would type:
/camp Karis
