The Captives of Freeport - Chapter II, Part 2
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unknown to the two girls, two figures standing beside a vision orb were watching them;
"Are you going to 'interfere' again, Tunare?" Karana asked.
Tunare looked up at her fellow god and smiled one of her warmest smiles, "I didn't interfere last time, Karana. I merely gave their parents a choice, and remember, the choices had consequences. They are my children, after all."
"You know what is to happen next. Are you going to let them find a way out of the Faydark?"
"I'll let my Feir'Dal child take over from here. They have gifts."
"Gifts they haven't had in hundreds of years, though. And what happens if Innorouk finds out?
And, of course, you are going to give the party from Freeport the same opportunities."
She sighed, "Of course, they'll be safe, too. And don't worry about Innorouk, he won't find out. She won't have it that long. Long enough to get them to safety and that's all. Then they will be on their own again.
On their own until the outcome is final. It is up to them after that to stay out of the wrong hands."
She sighed again. A weary, worn out sound, "And the fate that awaits the two of them is in their own hands."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was quiet and the two girls had walked like that for awhile now, when Kaefir suddenly stopped.
"Eli, run. Toward the Druid Circle, now. Run!"
"What are you talking about?"
"Don't ask any questions, just do as I say. Now."
A voice came into Elinea's head, a female voice; "Elinea, do as she says. Run toward the Druid Circle." It was a strangely familiar, but unfamiliar voice, and it took Elinea by surprise. She stopped. Kaefir started to run. It only took Elinea a moment to realize that something horrible was about to happen, and she too, started to run.
What happened next was something the two of them would remember for the rest of their lives. There was a defining roar and loud boom --- and a moment later, fire started to fall out of the sky in chunks of rock, setting everything they fell on, on fire. The two girls ran for the druid circle in the Faydark, guided by instinct and fear.
"We're both going to die; there's no place to hide", Elinea thought as she ran, but Kaefir was too far ahead of her for her to yell her thoughts, and she knew it was useless to voice them.
The rain of fire and rocks continued, but Elinea and Kaefir ran until they could no longer run. Just as Elinea had caught up to her companion, she spotted the circle and punched the tired Kaefir in the ribs, "Kae, keep running, almost there!"
She looked up and smiled, "Told you so!" And she started running with renewed strength, Elinea right beside her.
They reached the druid circle and collapsed in two small heaps in the center. It was quiet in the circle. Oh, the sound was still around them, but it sounded far off and muffled. The fire rocks were still falling, setting the forest on fire, but none fell on the girls inside the druid circle. "Mother of All, Kaefir was right", Elinea struggled to believe what she was seeing was truly happening. They were safe. Kaefir's head jerked up, "Eli, hurry---hide, now!"
The only place to "hide" was between two of the far stone pillars--which Kaefir now physically pushed Elinea to and made her sit down, a finger going up to her lips in a gesture of silence.
The next few minutes were spent in silence, a state Eli did not understand, until she saw a large party of Ogres, Trolls, and six Teir'Dal run into the circle and stop. "Freeport party", Elinea's lips silently said to Kaefir. Kaefir nodded in agreement.
The girls sat absolutely still in the shadow of two large pillars and held onto each others hands. Not a word and hardly a breath escaped either one of them. The Freeport party was in the center, and took up most of the circle. They stood there in silence also, until the rocks stopped falling. Then just as suddenly, it started to rain. The intense downpore continued for many minutes until all the fires around the circle had been put out. The air of the Faydark was an errie mixture of smoke and mist; denser even, than the fogs that Kaefir and Elinea had grown up with.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Karana, rain?"
"Well, I couldn't let your precious Faydark be completely destroyed, now could I? Not knowing that one day, you'll come back."
He let a small silence pass before he spoke again, "And knowing you have plans to finish for a certain people on Faydwer."
"And who said the Gods were ever going to grace Norrath by coming back?"
"I only say this because I know you, Tunare. And I am the only one who has paid attention to your 'secret' in the Faydark."
She smiled back at Karana, "Let's keep my secret, a secret shall we? Till the time is closer and more appropriate. I know a certain 'other God' who would like nothing better than to ruin this too."
