I know we have a 3 page thread going on the transmuting. I thought I'd post my 2 copper on my techniques with a wee step-by-step on how it's started.
First of all, transmuting is the process of 'breaking' down treasured to fabled items (books, armor, weapons) into pieces used for creating tempers, bindings, and adornments.
How to begin
4. Head to a tradeskill instance and get ready to blow a ton of plat and spend about 3 months working on this... lol
5. Your transmuting skill is maxed at 350 points. You can purchase or 'collect' through adventuring level 1 - 20 treasured items (must be book, armor/shield, or weapon -- not apprentice I - IV). Use one of your abilities to 'break' these items. Through this process you'll do two things:
6. After reaching maxing out at 100 points, you'll need to read your first Enigma of Transmuting book. This will teach you how to make tempers and bindings at the WORK BENCH for jewelers.
7. Creating these tempers and bindings will increase your transmuting points. Note: you do NOT get a point for each item. You usually get a point for every 2 - 3 combines. However, if you're lucky, it is possible to get a point for each combine, but it's highly unlikely.
8. BIG NOTE: creating tempers and bindings increase your transmuting points. Creating adornments which requires you to work at another work station... which requires you to use a rare and expensive fusion or potion... any advanced items such as handles, pommels, etc that take a rare fusion / potion... do NOT INCREASE your transmuting points. All these do is increase your "base" artisan experience.
9. Making tempers and bindings. This is what I do, you have 4 abilities/crafting spells for making transmuting items on the jewelers work bench. Two of those 4 spells use power, the other 2 do not. I personally only use the 2 spells that do not use power. I go down the list of tempers/bindings and hit those two spells continuously until the item is made pristine. Then I go to the next item of that tier until I've made them all. Typically, I never make the same item twice in a row. (Could be the voodoo in my head, but I think I get more points that way... lol).
Note: When you make a pristine temper/binding, you get a return of some fragments back. Example: it takes 1 powder and 8 fragments to make temper X. If you make that temper pristine, you get the temper PLUS 4 fragments in return. If you make a less than pristine temper, you get the temper plus 2 or 3 fragments back.
Every does their own thing, but personally, I prefer making pristines if I can... because then I get more fragments back, which means less buying of treasured - fabled items... saving me a little bit of money
10. Rinse and repeat until you've read all your books and you get 350/350.
