Despite my aversion to the unmitigated tedium of provisioning, I do actually get 9/10 pristines if I really want to. I use a system similar to Candu's, which I won't bother describing in detail atm, but basically I ride my three progress buffs with every tick - I hit every one of them, in a specific order, and then pause for each tick to see if a bad reaction comes up that I have to counter. Once I've nearly lost my highest tier of durability, I switch over to durability buffs, and hit each of them in a specific order after every tick.
This method (ideally) revs my progress up very quickly through the first 2-3 bars, and the switch to durability buffs generally prevents the fourth bar of durability from depleting. Even when it does drop to the 3rd bar, I can usually get it back. At this point, I don't cook for anyone but myself and my group, so I don't really care if a few are 'normal' quality or even 'shaped' (savory, in the culinary world). I just go for pristine for the XP, as the higher quality = more XP per item (in addition to the first-time pristine bonus).

One thing that most tradeskillers don't know unless they are a provisioner is that they are a much different class to craft with. Besides not being dependent on any of the other classes, they are much easier to craft with.
Reaction arts are more to advance progress or durability than to keep you from getting your butt kicked and dying, unlike other professions that multiple failures will cause a corpse almost every time. This being said, the progress is also a lot slower than other arts. Tier 2 reactions may give +20 durability in others only give +5 for a provisioner making it harder and slower to recover. If on the off chance you do get a failure that MAY cause you damage, they are very easy to resist. Even at adventure lvl 9, I resist almost every time.
Another thing that you have to adjust to as a provisioner is that for ingredient recipies (usually all your recipies for the first 4 lvls in each tier) are very fast to make. Most of the time you can just use your progress buffs and be done in 4 cycles of button presses. Once you get into multiple combine items, the progress needed is significantly increased. This is present in the other professions but not to the degree that provisioners have. This along with a timer on tradeskill writs is part of the class balancing for provisioners so they don't have it too easy.
As for the fastest way to get to level 10 in tradeskills, here is my personal fastest way to do it. You can do like most and run from station to station and make tempers to make tin bars to make this, that and the other thing. Or, If you do like I do on all my characters, I just use the stove and keg. Why just do this? Easy, because you don't have to gather ANYTHING. Go to the merchant, buy salt and pepper to make spice or buy flour and eggs to make bread or buy cocoa and milk to make chocolate. You can also make the chocolate into fudge for additional discovery xp but I usually only make one and don't bother beyond that. The 2 fastest will be the spice and chocolate since they need very little progress to complete. Sell back to the merchant to get your money back and start again. If you have room in your bank, stock up on the chocolate since it is an ingredient you will need for several recipies in each tier and you can't buy from the merchant (and it sucks to make grey recipies IMO).
Being a provisioner can be fun but it takes a while to get a feel for what you need for your recipies so you can plan ahead. Be sure to look through your recipies from all the tiers to do this. You get the same recipies at the same levels for each tier, only the primary ingredients change (with a couple exceptions). With the recent changes in the recipies this may not be 100% true but it was. Coffee, for example, was at lvl x5 (25, 35, 45). Even with the changes, they still are roughly the same but may be off a level now but are still pretty much the same between tiers. The main point is that all the recipies that you have with jum jum will become similar recipes with oranges, apples, peaches, etc. as you enter each tier.
I hope this has shed a bit of light on provisioners.
