Kendo and Flaena walked over to where Kaaylin and the others had gathered. He knew that look on Kaay's face, he had seen it before. It could only mean one thing. Trouble.
He looked over the edge of their perch and saw that his instincts were once again correct.
Down below where they stood, off in the distance, a large cloud of dust was coming toward them.
"Kaaylin. Shylah. How many do you think there are?"
"Oh, rough guess - twenty, twenty-five. Shylah?"
"Twenty-five by my eyes. Rather large party to send after two prisoners."
"Depends on how badly you want the prisoners," Kendo smiled, and looked back down, "Twenty-five? Well, we've had worse odds before."
Looking over to the others again, "There's only one way down from here. So here we fight."
Silence and understanding nods from his party.
"You've been, he paused and corrected himself, WE"VE been through this before, many times. We all know our jobs. Let's do it."
Kendo looked over at Flaena, who had been quiet through all of the talking.
"Flaena, I'm going to have to ask you to be our healer. I know, it's not going to be easy."
She looked at him and smiled, "We'll be fine."
She paused and continued, "I do wish Alfreya was here though."
"I wish she was here to help you. But you'll be great as always. I'm not worried."
She sighed and whispered under her breath, "I am."
Off to one corner the two girls quietly listened to all of the conversations. They hadn't spoken since the rescue, but Elinea's mind had been very active. She looked out across the mostly barren, dry Commonlands and knew what was going to happen.
She knew the group of mounted militia was coming for her and Kaefir. They were coming to take both of them back to Freeport. Back to their former captives to finish the job they had started.
Elinea took a deep breath and closed her eyes. She opened them and them looked up at the gray, overcast sky above her.
"I'm not going back to Freeport, Kaefir. Neither one of us is going back. And our friends, our rescuers, she looked over at Kendo's group, they're going to die."
"Eli .. "
"It's up to me, Kaefir."
She closed her eyes once again. And then a whispered plea came from her in a voice Kaefir had never heard before; a strange voice. It was Elinea's, but not the one Kaefir knew.
"Prince of Flames, Lord Solusek, here my words, my pleas. If you still hear the prayers of mortals, hear mine now."
She opened here eyes once more, "Give me the knowledge, guide my aim, help me do what I must do, mighty Prince of Flames."
She paused briefly and then continued, "Help me this one time, as unworthy as I am, and I promise you this ... when the time comes, and you return to Norrath, I will pledge my life and service to you. I promise you this with my life."
A calm, peaceful look came to her face as the others were positioning themselves. They moved so that they faced the narrow road that lead up to their position on the lonely rock.
The two girl's stayed as far away as they could ans still be able to see Kendo's group.
The cloud was close enough now to see the horses and individual riders.
Elinea raised her arms and put her hands together above her head. She closed her eyes and whispered a brief spell. She then turned her hands so the palms faced outward. Another whispered spell came from her lips. She lowered her arms and a blue flame ignited in both her palms.
She opened her eyes one last time and in a quiet, small voice, "We're not going back, Kaefir."
The cloud had come closer. Elinea suddenly raised her right hand and casted. A blue flame shot out and hit the Freeport party. A wall of flame ignited and set them on fire. The entire party that had been following them was engulfed in the wall, all at once.
They burned briefly, and then were gone.
The Commonlands below them was once again quiet and empty.
The Qeynos party stood in stunned, total silence, until Kendo spoke, "Well, I believe we know why they were under lock and key."
As Kendo's group continued to look below them in their stunned silence, Elinea suddenly clutched her stomach, "Kaefir !"
Before her companion could react and catch her, she collapsed in a small heap on the ground.
"Eli !"
Kaefir had bent down beside her fallen friend and was trying to rouse her, but Elinea was still and quiet. Flaena ran over to the collapsed girl on the ground, and bent down beside her to feel for a pulse.
"She's alive, she reassured the distraught Kaefir, it's 'casting sickness', she'll be fine."
Flaena got a blanket from Kendo's horse, and covered her. "She just needs time."
"Can't you heal her?"
"Unfortunately, no. There's no cure for casting sickness, it just has to wear off. She'll be fine when she wakes up."
Kaefir still looked unsure. "I know, you don't believe me, but I've seen it before. Trust me." She smiled and patted Kaefir on the shoulder, "Just stay with her and keep her warm."
Flaena got up from her bent position and walked back over to her party. "Casting sickness?"
"It's a sickness a young caster gets when he or she casts a strong spell for the first time, Kendo."
"Well, I think that spell qualifies as a strong one."
"She just needs some time. She doesn't need to be moved for a bit, though."
"Right then." Kendo looked over at Gimbali, "Gim?"
"Aye, Ken."
"You're in charge. I don't think you'll have anymore problems from Freeport. But if you get worried, you know what to do."
There was a quiet nod from the dwarf.
"Get them back home, Gim. Shy and I are going after Alfreya."
"Kendo ..."
"We'll be fine, Gim. I have one of the best troubadours in Norrath with me." He turned and smiled at Shylah.
"Thank you, Ken."
"Meet us in Thundermist Village, Gim."
"Aye,and if you don't get there, I'll send the Qeynos Guard out after you two."
Kendo chuckled as he mounted his horse, "All right, all right. You do what you feel is right."
"But, he looked over at Shylah and winked, we'll be fine."

Alfreya looked over at her silent captor. "Well, she thought, I might as well be cordial. After all, he did cook me a meal."
She cleared her throat and the Ogre looked up from his cleaning. "My name is Alfreya", she spoke in perfect Common. He said nothing and stared.
"Alright, well I guess he doesn't speak Common, " she sighed.
"Speak Common."
Alfreya gave a startled look, "Oh, I'm sorry. Yes, you do, don't you?"
"Speak it very well."
"I meant no insult, I'm sorry. So... " Alfreya stopped in mid thought, "So, what is your name, may I ask?"
"Gerra ... " a painful, sad look came to his eyes and he stopped.
He looked somewhere off in the distance past Alfreya, and then back at her and finally spoke. His voice was so low and quiet, Alfreya had to listen very hard to hear his reply.
"Kirac, my name is Kirac."
"Kirac, may I ask you how I came to be on your horse?"
Kirac put down the supply pack he had been refilling and looked at Alfreya for a few moments.
"Guard hit you. Your friends left. You were alone. I got you before guard could call friends."
"There were no guards that were alive. We killed them all."
He looked at her and shook his head, "You missed one. I killed the guard you missed, the one that hit you."
Alfreya put her hands on her hips, "That is a good story my friend. The only problem is that there were NO Ogres outside the gates at the time."
Kirac smiled and pulled out a totem, "Not that you could see, Little One."
"Ah, I see. An invisibility totem, she smiled, very smart."
An uncomfortable silence settled in, and then Alfreya's quiet whisper, "Thank you for rescuing me, Kirac."
There was a nod from the Ogre. He reached into the pack and pulled out Alfreya's horse whistle and handed it to her.
She took it from him and looked up, "Kirac, why were you outside the gates under invis in the first place? That is an unusual thing for a citizen of Freeport to do."
Kirac looked at her, "Somethings you should not ask about, Little One. It does not concern you."
Alfreya nodded. She used the whistle to call her horse. As she mounted, she looked over at the Ogre one last time. She was about to give her horse the signal to start, when she stopped.
"Thank you again, Kirac."
The Ogre was silent, and then spoke, "Take care, Little One, he paused and once again smiled, and you are welcome."
