Ro had climbed it's way to the top of the midday sky. Freeport sat under an almost cloudless blue-gray sky in a fretful heat. The only relief came from an occasional, stagnant breeze that blew errant trash down the deserted streets.
In this heat and quiet, a small group of six made it's way down the West Freeport streets unnoticed by the wandering passerby or the rounding guards. There were four guards and the two girls. The guards finally stopped several hundred yards from the gate out to the Commonlands, and set up a small table for the two young captives to eat.
Elinea stood to one side with a guard. She made no attempt to sit down or move, and stood with her hands tied behind her back.
She looked over at Kaefir and gave her a strange, contemptuous smile,
"Go ahead and eat, Kae. I've already eaten. I ate in my room. I'm just here for the 'fresh air and sun'."
She started to laugh under her breath in a way Kaefir had never heard. It was a strange otherworldly sound, and it made her flesh suddenly get cold and clammy.
"Eli, what's wrong? What's happened to you?"
Elinea looked up at the sky for a moment then spoke,
"Nothing's wrong, Kae. I'm the best I've ever been. I've had my eyes opened for the first time."
She laughed again, "Nothing has happened that should not have happened a long time ago. I've been living a lie and the Overlord has shown me that."
She continued, "Do you know WHY they made me eat in my room, Kaefir? Because they are afraid of me. They have to keep my hands tied because they know what I can do. I could take out half of Freeport if I wanted. They should be afraid of me......"
Her voiced trailed off to silence.
Kaefir was silent and looked away to try and control her tears.
That's when she heard the quiet sobs coming from Elinea,
"Kaefir, they're winning. There are too many of them and they never quit. They never let me sleep. They're just too strong. I'm losing the battle, Kae."
"Eli please don't say that. We can beat them."
"Kaefir, how? They are just too strong. I am beginning to realize there is no way out for me. You still have...."
"Elinea, I am not leaving you. I won't even entertain the thought, so don't mention it. We just have to be strong and look for a chance."
"You remember the 'chance' I saw and we took when we first got here? It didn't work then. And it won't work now, at least not for me."
Kaefir was silent as Elinea's tears continued. When she could no longer stand them, she reached out and took her friend in her arms and held her as she cried.
"Eli, it'll be ok. Don't cry."
"No it won't, Kae. No it won't."
Kaefir stood and held her crying friend with her eyes closed and sent a prayer of assistance to Tunare. But inside, she knew no one would hear her. Suddenly, her eyes flew open and she let go of Elinea's shoulders.
She stepped back abruptly, "No don't do this. No!"
She grabbed her head, "This is wrong, all wrong!"
"Kaefir, what's the matter?" Elinea reached out to comfort her friend, but Kaefir backed away.
"Eli, please, please don't touch me. Something is very wrong."
"What?"
She was quiet for a few seconds, "Eli, when I was holding you, I suddenly...... All I wanted to do ....... Eli, I wanted to 'take over', I wanted to 'own' your soul. They're turning me into an inquisitor. They're getting to me too. I just didn't realize it till now."
Kaefir fell to her knees and was quietly crying. Elinea bent down as best she could, "Kae, we'll be fine, honest. You and I will still be friends. I have a little more fight left in me yet."
